The First Open-to-All Coffee Rides in Portugal

PCA: Pioneers of Open Coffee Rides with Professional Photography in Portugal

Cycling has been rapidly growing in Portugal, yet until recently, the concept of organized Coffee Rides—group rides that combine a relaxed pace, social interaction, and an essential coffee stop—was virtually nonexistent.

In 2022, Portugal Cycling Academy (PCA) conducted extensive internal research and found that no cycling club in Portugal had used the term “Coffee Ride” for their events in the past three years. Recognizing this gap, PCA took the initiative to establish Portugal’s first open-to-all Coffee Rides.

What set these rides apart was not just their accessibility but also the introduction of professional photography for cycling events, as well as a dedicated support vehicle for safety and assistance.

Since 2023, PCA’s Coffee Rides in Portugal have been held monthly across various Portuguese cities, attracting between 20 and 35+ participants per event.

The Evolution of Coffee Rides in Portugal

The first PCA Coffee Ride took place in Torres Vedras, gathering more than 23 cyclists. The second ride, organized in collaboration with Westbike bicycle shop, saw an even greater turnout of over 30 participants.

Buoyed by this success, PCA committed to hosting regular Coffee Rides in Portugal, expanding them to different regions. Throughout 2023, at least one free cycling event in Portugal was held each month, always guided by two experienced leaders and a professional cycling coach. This ensured a structured yet enjoyable experience for cyclists of all levels.

Why Are PCA Coffee Rides the Best Cycling Events in Portugal?

Expert-Led Rides with Professional Coaching
Each Coffee Ride is led by at least two experienced guides and a certified cycling coach, ensuring:
  • Effective group management, including the formation of subgroups based on different pace levels.
  • Immediate technical support for any mechanical issues.
  • Real-time coaching on cycling techniques, including pedaling efficiency and positioning.
This setup allows beginner cyclists in Portugal to feel secure and supported while gaining valuable insights into improving their skills.
Professional Photography for Every Coffee Ride
A unique feature of PCA’s Coffee Rides is the presence of a professional cycling photographer at almost every event. This offers riders the opportunity to:
  • Capture high-quality memories of their cycling experience.
  • Share their rides on social media, increasing community engagement.
Enjoy access to professional cycling photos at no cost.
Dedicated Support Vehicle for Large Cycling Events
For rides with over 30 participants, PCA provides a support vehicle, offering:
  • On-the-spot assistance with mechanical issues such as flat tires.
  • Emergency transport for cyclists if needed.
  • Additional support for photographers, allowing for dynamic and diverse shots throughout the ride.
Often, the support vehicle is personally driven by PCA’s founder, Darina Balabai, ensuring a hands-on approach to rider safety and logistics.
Free and Open Participation in Coffee Rides
Unlike many organized cycling events in Portugal, PCA’s Coffee Rides are completely free. Participants benefit from:
  • Well-planned routes designed for scenic and enjoyable experiences.
  • Guidance from knowledgeable ride leaders.
  • Complimentary professional photography.
  • On-route technical and safety support.
PCA’s goal is to foster an inclusive and vibrant cycling community in Portugal, making cycling more accessible to all.

The Influence of PCA Coffee Rides on Portugal’s Cycling Scene

By late 2023, PCA Coffee Rides had gained widespread popularity. Inspired by PCA’s model, other cycling groups in Portugal started organizing similar rides, reinforcing the growing enthusiasm for this format.

For PCA, this expansion was a testament to success. The primary mission has always been to cultivate a cycling culture in Portugal, and the increasing number of Coffee Rides in Portugal indicated a positive shift in the community’s engagement with the sport.
PCA Coffee Rides play a crucial role in growing the cycling community, and for me as a bike shop owner, they are invaluable. These rides bring together all kinds of cyclists—beginners, experienced riders, and those simply looking for a group to join. It’s an opportunity for newcomers to ride with experienced cyclists, learn essential group riding skills, and most importantly, enjoy a great day on the bike. Many beginners might feel discouraged riding alone, but in a group, they find motivation, support, and a true sense of belonging. For businesses like mine, these rides also introduce new clients who are looking to immerse themselves in cycling. That’s why I believe Coffee Rides are an essential part of the cycling culture.
